Information for Parents
During their time in school, some students may experience a learning difficulty. We seek to identify such learning difficulties via our visits to Primary Schools, by communication with parents, the use of screening tests and by referral from individual subject teachers. Where appropriate, students have a Support Plan. This details any learning difficulties and some strategies to help to overcome them as well as short or medium term targets. When a Support Plan is written or reviewed, parents and students are consulted and their input is encouraged and valued.
We have a team of experienced Teaching Assistants who work with teachers and parents to support students within the classroom. We also have a Learning Support resource centre which is used for more intensive support in small groups. This is also open at lunchtime for students who need some extra help with their work from support staff.
Some students who have an Education Health Care Plan of special educational needs are allocated a keyworker. Their role is to support their students as appropriate. This may be to help them with organising their equipment or to liaise with their teachers. The keyworker will also keep track of progress and review a student’s Support Plan if they have one.
Core Intervention Programme
At Banovallum School, we believe literacy is the key to accessing the school curriculum which in turn boosts confidence and self-esteem, raises achievement and enhances life-chances. It is for this reason that we have created a Core Intervention programme. This supports those students for whom literacy and dyslexia can be a barrier to learning. The programme is delivered by the SEND Instructor. Students work in small groups and we use a variety of resources including computer software, games and comprehension exercises. Students join for two hours a week for three years instead of French.
The Learning Support Base
The base is open during break time and lunchtime for students who need some additional help with their homework from the support staff.
Room 16 is open every lunchtime for all students to use to complete homework. Staff are on hand to help and support you with your work.
